Fernando Alonso has failed to qualify for this years Indy 500, as such, the Spaniard will not be taking part in Sundays race, and trying his luck at securing the world famous Triple Crown.
The Triple Crown, which has been won only once before by Graham Hill, is essentially an unofficial motorsport award consisting of three wins at considerably the most prestigious motor racing events: Monaco Grand Prix; Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Fernando Alonso has already secured both the victory at Le Mans and Monaco, as such, all hopes were resting on this years Indy 500 for another notch to be added to Alonso's belt. Previously, the two time F1 world champion had attempted the Indy 500 win in 2017, where unfortunately he suffered an engine failure during the Sunday race.
However, this year Alonso failed to secure a starting place for the race on Sunday after the first attempts on Saturday. Consequently, the 36 year old took part in the six-car Last Row Shootout, which began with a delayed start due to weather conditions. Once the track began clearing up, the six cars took to the track where Fernando posted the fourth slowest average speed and missed out by just 0.019 mph on average over his four laps.
Therefore, Fernando Alonso may have to wait yet another year before he secures a victory at Indy 500 and the ever sought-after Triple Crown. But as they say, third time's a charm...
