Sergey Sirotkin has been appointed McLaren's reserve driver ahead of the French Grand Prix. Sirotkin has had one year experience in Formula 1 due to his season last year with Williams. However, the Russian finished 20th in the championship standings with just one lone point.

Sirotkin spent this year racing for SMP Racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), he even competed at Le Mans 24 Hours however, his car was retired at 222 laps. Sergey will continue to race under SMP in WEC for the remainder of the season. As well as retaining his role as Renault reserve driver.

McLaren's Andreas Seidl stated," This is an expedient solution for McLaren in 2019. Sergey is a known quantity, he has the necessary superlicence points and is formally aligned to our engine provider, Renault, so he is the obvious candidate."

Sergey was thrilled for the opportunity, emphasised by his comments this morning, "I'm glad to join McLaren as a reserve driver. I will combine this job with a similar position at Renault. McLaren is a legendary team and I'm happy to have this opportunity to work with them, join their history, see from the inside how the team and drivers work. I also thank SMP Racing and Renault for their support."
