Following last week's race at Singapore, Romain Grosjean, Haas driver, has received a further two penalty points for ignoring blue flags and holding up the race leaders. These two points bring Grosjean ever closer to a race ban. If the Franco-Swiss was to receive a further three penalty points, he would be banned from a race.
The Formula One penalty system means once you receive a point it stays on record for an entire year. As such, Grosjean has to make it until 29th October without gaining 3 points to dodge a race ban. Once he has reached said date, one penalty point will be deducted. Additionally, the same will happen 12th November, however, this time two points will be deducted which were awarded to him after he caused a collision in last years race in Brazil.
Grosjean is the current leader in penalty points. He leads the points with a whopping total of nine. Followed by Marcus Ericsson with seven points, then Sergey Sirotkin with six points. The current championship leader, Lewis Hamilton, hasn't received a single point. Hamilton along with Esteban Ocon and Charles Leclerc are the only three drivers on the grid to have a clean slate. Where as, Sebastian Vettel, who is also in the championship fight, has received three penalty points this past season from the French Grand Prix for causing a collision in which he received two points and the Austrian Grand Prix for impeding Carlos Sainz's qualifying lap, he received one penalty point for this.
Romain Grosjean has received a race ban before in his Formula One career, after he caused a collision at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix in 2012 which resulted in a multi car accident, taking out championship contenders, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The stewards duly gave Grosjean a race ban at the next race, which was the Italian Grand Prix. He is one of five to have received such a heavy penalty. The others being Nigel Mansell, Eddie Irvine, Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Three of which have become World Champions!
