Finland's newest race track, KymiRing, is set to hold the MotoGP in 2020. However, Formula 1 is now looking into the possibility of Finland hosting the newest F1 race. MotoGP and Formula 1 cross paths at five different race tracks throughout the season. Some of them being: Silverstone, The Red Bull Ring, Circuit of the Americas, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and the former F1 track, Sepang in Malaysia.
AKK Motorsport, the Finnish governing body of motorsports, has launched an official study into the possibility of hosting a Grand Prix weekend at the KymiRing race track, a circuit consisting of 2.79 miles. However, the investigation will be ongoing for some time, as the track is said to be only 80% complete. MotoGP were expecting a race this year, but unfortunately it had to be postponed due to the track being unfinished. The track is due to be finished by June this year.
Finland has produced three World Champions: Keke Rosberg, Kimi Raikkonen and Mikka Hakkinen, who secured two world titles in his F1 career. Finland has also produced a further five Formula 1 drivers: Leo Kinnunen, Mikko Kozarowitzky, JJ Lehto, Mika Salo and Heikki Kovalainen. Yet, it has never hosted an F1 race. There hasn't been a Grand Prix in the Nordic regions for over 40 years, after Sweden's Anderstorp track stopped hosting after 6 seasons in 1978.
So will Finland be the newest country to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix?
Liberty Media have already proved they can and are willing to change after adding the Vietnam Grand Prix to the 2020 F1 calendar. Will Formula 1 take the leap to the Arctic Circle?
