Aussie Aussie Aussie... Ricciardo OUT, McLaren Making Way For Piastri

As Formula One returns this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix, Silly Season continues this time with the focus on McLaren. The Woking based team have confirmed Daniel Ricciardo will not be racing for them next season.

Despite the Australian having a contract until the end of the 2023 season, a buy-out of an estimated $21 million, has meant both Ricciardo and the team have mutually agreed to terminate their contract early. Although no official announcement has been made yet, this early exit makes room for fellow Australian Oscar Piastri to join the papaya coloured team.

Alpine, however, remain adamant that Piastri will be racing for the French outfit next season.

Daniel Ricciardo stated, "It's been a privilege to be a part of the McLaren Racing family for the last two seasons but following several months of discussions with Zak (Brown) and Andreas (Seidl) we have decided to terminate my contract with the team early and agree to mutually part ways at the end of this season."

Andreas Seidl, Mclaren's team principle said, "We have to acknowledge we didn’t make it work together, despite all the commitment from Daniel’s side and the team’s side, despite all the effort we all have put in. That’s why we came to the decision that we wanted to make a change for next year..."

McLaren's CEO, Zak Brown also commented, "Daniel has been a great addition to McLaren, and it’s been a pleasure working with him. I’d like to thank him for all of his efforts over the last two seasons both trackside and back at base. It’s no secret that we hoped we could achieve more together but seeing him stand on the top step of the podium as a McLaren driver was a highlight."

Although five seats on the grid are yet to be confirmed, the 33-year-old seemed hesitant in announcing his next steps. "I'll be announcing my own future plans in due course but regardless of what this next chapter brings, I have no regrets and am proud of the effort and work I gave McLaren, especially the win in Monza, last season."

Whether Ricciardo will remain in Formula One is still up for debate as vacant seats remain at Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Alpha Tauri, Haas and Williams. However, Ricciardo also has options elsewhere such as IndyCar, and if he were to move to the American race circuit it is likely that 2022 could be his final season in Formula One.

After Ricciardo's announcement it seems only a matter of time before Oscar Piastri is announced to drive for McLaren next season.
