Fernando Alonso may not be a Formula 1 driver anymore, but let's be real who isn't still following what he's doing. Alonso and his team have won the 24 hours of Daytona in the Wayne Taylor Racing Team.
Alonso alongside his three other teammates: Kamui Kobayashi, ex-Sauber F1 driver; Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande have won the Daytona 24 Hours. However, the race was red flagged twice due to torrential rains and was finished early due to safety reasons. Fernando admitted after the race that he had been on the radio pleading for the safety car even when he was in second, which would have meant that would be their finishing position. "I called a lot of times, when I was second, over the radio that a safety car was necessary,” said Alonso. “The last five, seven laps of the race were not I think right, for anyone on track."
This year was Alonso's second attempt at the Daytona victory, he previously attempted the victory alongside Lando Norris, who will be taking over from the Spaniard at McLaren, however they finished 38th.
Fernando Alonso is now the third Formula 1 World Champion to have won the Daytona race. The others being: Phil Hill, the 1961 F1 World Champion, won Daytona in 1964 and Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 World Champion, won Daytona in 1972.
Although the Daytona 24 hours isn't part of the triple crown, it is still a prestigious victory to achieve and another notch to be added to his belt. Fernando only has the Indianapolis 500 to win to secure the longed for triple crown. He has already secured two Monaco victories in both 2007 and 2008 and has also won Le Mans 24 Hours last year with Toyota!
After such a huge win-less period in Formula 1, I think it's safe to say, Fernando Alonso has still got it!
